Environmental Sustainability
Environmental considerations are integrated into all Crossrail's activities, with particular focus given to the development of environmental minimum requirements for progressing the design and construction of the Crossrail project.
Crossrail will:
- adopt an integrated approach to environmental management, treating all legal obligations as a minimum standard;
- integrate environmental considerations into design development;
- develop a set of environmental minimum requirements for the construction phase which are founded on current industry standards and government policy;
- set out a framework for the environmental management system to be used during the construction phase, including regular review of the environmental minimum requirements;
- include environmental criteria in the procurement process and require contractors and suppliers to conform to these criteria;
- seek the practicable prevention of pollution in day to day activities; report our environmental performance to stakeholders at the High Level Forum, chaired at Ministerial level;
- train employees to comply with the implementation of this policy.
Internally Crossrail is committed to reducing its carbon footprint as a company, and a cross-departmental group of staff has formed to act as Environmental Champions and take steps to reduce waste and energy use within our offices.
Economic and Social Projects
Crossrail is committed to being a fully inclusive project. Our work to commit to the GLA Group's Responsible Procurement Framework contains several commitments to maximise access for local suppliers into the procurement process. Suppliers can sign up to the CompeteFor site, used by the Olympics, to access Crossrail contracts as they become available.
The Young Crossrail project continues to be an important means of communicating with children and young people along the route.
