Health safety and environment

Health and safety management is critical to the success of the Crossrail programme.

1. CRL Health, Safety and Environment Policy Statement

The Crossrail Ltd. (CRL) Health Safety and Environment Policy Statement sets the leadership framework for the Programme. The Policy commits to the following:

  • aspire to achieve zero accidents culture, incidents and near misses;
  • seeks to have a minimal impact on the environment through our construction activities by ensuring operational controls are robust so as to promote the principals of pollution prevention
  • aim for health safety and environmental excellence in our own activities and promote exemplary health safety and environmental performance from consultants and Contractors
  • provide effective leadership to the Programme in order to promote a positive health safety and environmental culture and engage management and workforces in continuous improvement
  • provide proactive management and assurance of health safety and environmental aspects in design and construction, including the requirements of the Crossrail Act and Environmental Minimum Requirements
  • set standards for occupational health performance that reduce health risks and promote a healthy working environment; and
  • promote a culture in which all CRL personnel work in accordance with these commitments.The Transport for London and CRL Health Safety and Environment Policy Statements can be found by by clicking here.

2. CRL Health, Safety and Environment: Contractors and Industry Partners Standard

CRL aspires to build Crossrail in a way that achieves a zero accident culture across the Programme. The core drivers of this philosophy are that CRL employees and all organisations working directly for CRL or under the control of the Project Delivery Partner (Crossrail Central) shall:

  • give training that will allow employees in positions of leadership to positively reinforce safe behaviours that prevent injuries, and to coach / discuss at-risk behaviours that can contribute to injuries or incidents
  • have training programmes in place to ensure that employees are competent to understand the risk controls and behaviours expected to undertake the tasks they are doing; and
  • commit sufficient resources to fully support the zero accident philosophy.

The CRL Health Safety and Environment: Contractors and Industry Partners Standard sets the health and safety related framework and mandated Standards that apply to the supply chain engaged on the project. The document is also intended for use as reference by Industry Partners and Stakeholders in helping set benchmarks for health and safety activity.

3. CRL Health, Safety and Environment Agreement

The 'Health Safety and Environment Agreement' is a one page agreement signed by principal parties involved in delivering Crossrail. It sets out a number of key health, safety and environmental leadership behaviours and values that underpin a shared determination to work together to deliver excellence across the programme. The Agreement forms a part of the programme to support our zero accident work.
