SILVER BIRCH SIDINGS, OLD OAK COMMON
Over two days in June, volunteers from Crossrail contractor BFK took part in an exercise to clean up an important area of birch woodland next to the Grand Union Canal close to Old Oak Common.
BFK, a BAM, Ferrovial and Kier joint venture who are constructing the new Crossrail tunnels between Royal Oak and Farringdon, partnered with the charity and green spaces expert Groundwork and the Parks Police Service to complete the task. Groundwork is progressing with a series of projects alongside the Grand Union Canal, designed to clean up the area and support local bio-diversity.
BFK also laid on free lunches for all of the 28 volunteers who took part, supplied two skips (via sub-contractor Powerday) and temporary toilets.
Philip Crowther of the Parks Police thanked BFK for their support: “Thanks very much for your assistance and sponsorship with the clean-up of the site… This event will be a blueprint for further projects along the canal… it’s been brilliant and a pleasure working with you.”
