Find out about the community investment initiatives that our contractors have undertaken in Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

MEANWHILE GARDENS, WESTBOURNE PARK

A team of 13 volunteers from Crossrail contractor BFK have been working in The Meanwhile Gardens in Westbourne Park.

BFK (a BAM Nuttall/Ferrovial/Kier joint venture) are constructing the new Crossrail tunnels between Royal Oak and Farringdon. They plan to carry out a number of initiatives as part of the Crossrail Community Investment Programme, supporting the communities local to their works.

One of their first initiatives was carried out at The Meanwhile Gardens in Westbourne Park where a team of BFK volunteers removed an old wooden bridge crossing the Gardens’ pond that had become unsafe. The Meanwhile Gardens, established in 1976, are an important asset for the community, providing an oasis for relaxation and a resource for local community groups.

Chandrika Dalpat, the Gardens’ Project Manager, says: “We get school groups here learning about pond life, we have people practicing their tai chi in one area of our gardens, there’s PE lessons taking place on the lawn. There’s just a real cross-section of the community here. You made the job look so easy but for our team it would have been a major undertaking over a number of days”.
