Future Crossrail passengers can expect to experience the following at the new stations:
- Reduced crowding due to wider and longer trains and platforms.
- Step-free access to trains and lifts at all stations for passengers with mobility challenges (see station accessibility map below)
- More spacious stations - the overall design consideration is to eliminate a cramped environment and create a sense of spaciousness
- A light, bright space - tickets halls will utilise natural light wherever possible
- Enhanced passenger safety with use of platform-edge doors for access to trains
- Oyster - it is envisaged that Crossrail's ticketing system will be fully integrated within Transport for London's network, utilising Oyster services.
- Ventilated platforms for hot weather - air cooling shafts will be incorporated at all stations for effective ventilation
- Ticket halls on either end of platforms will provide greater accessibility to Crossrail.
Design review panel
A design review panel was set up by CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) in November 2008. It provides expert advice on the quality of designs for new Crossrail stations, and the urban realm outside them to ensure a high quality passenger experience whether connecting to Crossrail by walking, cycling or on another form of transport.
The panel is assessing designs for new stations in prime locations: Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Custom House.
