Projects : Parliament in Action : The Course

-
The students overall task was:
To plan and present a comprehensive strategy that will lead to the successful obtaining of powers, from Parliament, to construct a new railway line from London to Cambridge.

The workshops were in two parts and were designed to broaden the student's experience of:
  • Design and Construction issues relating to railways;
  • Environmental considerations;
  • The Parliamentary process;
  • What and how to influence policy makers and politicians.

The students worked in mixed school, and age, groups. An 'online' support network was created by London Gifted and Talented. This was password protected and contained details of work undertaken and a message board for communication.

The morning session (9.30 – 12.30) consisted of a key note speech, student question and answer session, student presentations and opportunity for student groups to plan accomplishment of task. Teachers considered professional development issues after the key note speech.

The afternoon session (1.30 – 3.30) consisted of a 'vocational' visit:
  • Crossrail Offices
  • The Palace of Westminster
  • A Barristers Chambers – Landmark Chambers
  • The Royal Courts of Justice
  • The Crossrail Select Committee room
  • The Visitors Gallery of the House of Commons
